ORIGIN STORY
Oaa Tseldor was a young alien among the most recent class of students in the Legion Academy. He was a relative of Legion of Super-Heroes physician Dr. Gym'll, who was his doting and worrisome uncle. Oaa was one of several born to the fourth litter of Gym'll's sister.
As Variable Lad, Oaa's meta ability allowed him to acquire practically any super power he could desire one at a time. It was hinted that these power changes were random, though Variable Lad at times did demonstrate a cognizant choice in abilities he was summoning. During the course of his tenure at the Legion Academy, he appeared to be limited to assuming only physical abilities. Whenever Variable Lad adapted a new power, his physical form also mutated into a state that capitalized on the ability. No known limitation was placed on the length of time he could assume a form.
While kind and studious, Oaa was often excluded from many of his classmates' extra-curricular activities. Despite this, he cared a great deal for his friends and even gave his life to save them while battling Cosmic King. When the villain threatened to transmute his teammates to dust, Variable Lad attacked with a reflective form that killed him but also bounced the fatal attack back on Cosmic King. His death prompted fellow classmate Gravity Kid to resign from the Academy to pursue his personal life.
